Upgrading an Apple Power Mac Sawtooth G4 500 mhz

Well if you read my Gigabit Ethernet article, you'll be surprised to find out that I actually received a Sawtooth G4 500 mhz instead of a dual processor Gigabit Ethernet machine. I was a little hacked off but worked it out with the seller through a hefty refund. I am now the owner of a G4 Sawtooth for $15.99 total. Oh well, I'll see if I can make it work. I'm basically upgrading it for a friend to use. He's never used a mac before and it's time to switch from peecee.

I thought I had some memory that would work on this machine but I was wrong. That's too bad because I had four 256 meg sticks which would have made a nice even 1 gig of ram - plenty to run Tiger with. I ended up finding two 512 meg sticks through ramseeker.com for a little less than $23 a stick. Not a bad upgrade.

In trying to get the old ram to work with the machine, I noticed that memory can make a big difference in how fast a machine runs. With just 128 and 192 megs of ram, Tiger was dirt slow. When I put the entire 448 megs of ram that came with the machine, it was much more useable. I'm sure there's a point of diminishing returns but I'll be interested to see how it runs with 1.25 gigs of ram.

I also stuck in a 160 gig hard drive. I later found out that Sawtooth's only address a maximum of 128 gigs. Of course, I had already gotten rid of my PCI ATA card which would have corrected that problem. Oh well! I'm looking to pick up a USB 2.0 PCI card as well and a cheap video card if they still exist.
